Like many people, I use to live for the weekends. With only 90 minutes between getting home from work and bedtime, I constantly thought “There’s no way I can do [this] today, I’ll do it this weekend!”
[This] being writing a blog post, folding clothes, organizing the linen closet, whatever!
Then the weekend would come and I’d be too swamped with laundry, dishes, grocery shopping, etc. to actually enjoy spending time with my family like I wanted to.
Meanwhile I was working 40+ hours every week with a 45 minute commute each way and still barely making ends meet.
Something had to change.
So in November 2015, I launched my first for-profit blog ThriftyGuardian.com. See, I’d been blogging for nearly 20 year (we’re talking the days of Xanga and Neopets!), but I never thought to do it as a career. I was so fed up, though!
Fed up with barely seeing my little ones. Fed up with paying out the nose for daycare. Fed up with just being plain exhausted.
After only six months, Thrifty Guardian was profitable enough to allow me to say GOODBYE to my career in Higher Education to work from home full time as a blogging mentor and business marketing strategist.
I’m now soon entering my third year as a work-at-home mom and with two preschoolers, my days are anything but predictable.
My mornings usually begin with one child or the other poking me in the side at 6am, whispering “Mom…Mommy….MOM, I want to go downstairs!” So down the stairs we trudge as I get the coffee and breakfast going while the little ones brush their teeth and dress.
While they eat, I check my e-mail, respond to clients as needed, and evaluate the plan for the day that I drafted up the night before.
My 3 year old has preschool in the mornings, so after we drop her off, I get to work on writing my next blog post while my 4 year old works on a craft or watches PBS kids. Then it’s his turn for school, while I check in with my favorite Facebook groups and my daughter plays dolls or colors.
Once my husband comes home from work at 5, I head up to my office to either take client calls or get some distraction-free work done. My husband is in charge of bedtime, so after the kids say “good night” I begin to map out my plans for the following day – an essential component to success and focus.
Yes, I work most weekends (at least part of the time) but the freedom I have otherwise isn’t something I’d give up for anything. For example, I’m writing this post on a Saturday afternoon, but I’m also watching 90 Day Fiance while I do so (I know, shame on me for multitasking!) Not only can I binge a bit of TV sometimes when I work, but I’m also able to take breaks whenever I want and do fun things – like decorating for the holidays or crafting with my kiddos!
If you want to find success as a business owner, you need to have consistency, purpose, and planning (even if you don’t have little ones at home with you like I do!)
Without consistency, your audience will stop listening. And if no one is listening, no one is investing.
Without purpose, you’ll constantly border on burnout. It’s so important to have your “why” at the forefront of your mind to keep you moving forward toward your freedom.
Without planning, you’ll have a hundred ideas pulling you in a thousand different directions and you’ll never narrow in on those that can actually make you money and build your business.
Those gifted with an entrepreneurial spirit have it within them to bring their dreams to life, but it takes conquering your fear and trusting in your capabilities. You were given your gifts for a reason, believe in that and you’ll move mountains.
Your freedom is out there waiting for you, you just have to the courage to go after it.
